The royal alexandra theatre
In 1907 the Royal Alexandra Theatre was established and opened in Toronto, Ontario for the performing arts. The Royal Alexandra Theatre is renowned, the oldest theatre in all of North America.
The Royal Alexandra Theatre was built with outstanding architecture amongst the ceilings and walls of the interior. It also has approximately 1400 seats with four exclusive balconies across the side walls called the “Gods space” for V.I.P’s.
Just outside the entrance way of the theatre, star shaped golden plaques were placed upon the ground in honour of celebrity icons engraved into them. Many honoured celebrities engraved into these plaques are Jim Carrey, Marilyn Miller, Humphery Bogart and many more. Reasons for this tradition are for when these celebrities visit the Royal Alex to see a production and in favour of their name from the owner of Mirvish productions, a plaque.
Since 1963, Edwin Mirvish (Owner of Mirvish Enterprises) was the owner of this theatre along with several others. These included the Ed Mirvish Theatre, Panasonic Theatre and also, the Prince of Wales Theatre. Ed was known greatly for his honesty of telling his customers the truth of his theatres. For example; great affordable prices and amazing seating. Since then, Ed has been known as, “Honest Ed”.
First off, making his money from his theatres, eventually Ed established his own store in 1948 named, Honest Ed’s. Built in 1948, this store was the known as the world’s first bargain shop. Back in 1948, Honest Ed’s was known for letting the customers pick the prices at a reasonable cost. Now, known for their low prices and tons of inventory, Honest Ed’s has a slogan that says, “Welcome, don’t faint at our low prices, there’s no place to lie down”.
44 years later in 2007, Ed Mervish passed away, leaving his son, David Mervish, (born in 1945) to take ownership of his theatres.
To this day, the Royal Alexandra Theatre has been one of the most successful theatres in Toronto with upcoming and recent productions of La Cage Aux Folles and the past successful production, The Wizard of Oz.
Did you know that the Royal Alexandra Theatre has several different name variations such as: The Royal Alex, The Alex and The R.A.T.
