The Ed Mirvish Theatre was also known as the Canon Theatre (2001), Imperial Theatre (1930), Imperial Six (1973), and The Pantages (1920). Up until December 6, 2011 when the the name changed in memory of Ed Mirvish after his death in 2007, the name was changed by his son David Mirvish. The theatre opened in 1920 with the capacity of 3373 and was renovated in 1972 and 1989 with the capacity of 2200.

In the beginning the theatre was owned by Alexander Pantages. In 1930 he was forced to sell all of his theatres, and the Famous People Players bought the theatre and named it "The Imperial" for 50 years or more. In 1986 Cineplex Odeon wanted to have the theatre for their motion pictures. The theatre was renovated after that and reopened as the "new" Pantages in 1989.The Pantages was operated up until 1999. On July 2001 Mirvish Productions owner of The Royal Alexandra and The Princess of Wales theatre changes the name to Canon Theatre. On December 6, 2011 David Mirvish, changed the name to Ed Mirvish Theatre.
